Bone Density

Bone Density

Several methods are available to measure bone density, but currently the most widely used technique is DXA, Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry. The Central DXA, performed at the lumbar spine and hip is the "Gold Standard" and currently the only method recognized for diagnosing and monitoring the effect of osteoporosis therapy. CT & MRI can also measure bone density at the spine and hip, but not comparable to other modalities and not used for monitoring therapy. Peripheral test such as the heel or finger using Ultrasound maybe use as a screening test to estimate fracture risk and should not be used to monitor therapy.
