Biography
Dr. Shanley Banaag earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, where she was inducted into the Sigma Sigma Phi honor society in recognition of her academic excellence and commitment to service. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where she distinguished herself through exceptional clinical performance and leadership.
After her military service in the United States Navy, Dr. Banaag pursued a fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at Scripps in San Diego, California, where she developed a focused interest in non-malignant hematologic disorders. During her fellowship, she sought advanced training at both the UNC Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center and the UCSD Center for Bleeding and Clotting.
Dr. Banaag specializes in the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of benign hematologic conditions, including anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, and sickle cell disease. Her research includes multi-institutional and retrospective studies on the management of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in patients at high risk for venous thromboembolism, as well as the implementation of electronic medical record tools to enhance immunotherapy safety. She has contributed to peer-reviewed publications and authored book chapters on complex hematologic and oncologic topics, such as bloodless management of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and chemotherapy outcomes in older adults.
A passionate educator, Dr. Banaag has served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She has also lectured on Hematology-Oncology topics to physician assistant students and internal medicine residents in San Diego. She has presented her work at leading national conferences, including the American College of Physicians (ACP) and the Osteopathic Medical Education Conference (OMED), on subjects ranging from thrombophilia and hematologic malignancies to immune-related adverse events.
Dr. Banaag holds active medical licenses in Virginia and North Carolina, and she is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American Society of Hematology (ASH), American College of Physicians (ACP), and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
Outside of medicine, Dr. Banaag is an avid endurance athlete, having completed numerous marathons and ultra-distance races. In 2024, she completed her first Ironman 70.3 in Hawaii. Her greatest joy, however, comes from spending time with her husband and two children.
