Biography

Dr. Julia Schaefer-Cutillo is a board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist who is proud to serve the Elizabeth City community. She has practiced hematology and oncology in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, for more than four years, during which time the practice has grown to more than double its original size under her leadership and expertise.

Dr. Schaefer-Cutillo began her medical career in New York over 20 years ago. She earned her medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, graduating at the top of her class in 2003. She completed her internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was recognized as Resident of the Year, and went on to complete fellowship training in both hematology and oncology at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York.

Following her training, Dr. Schaefer-Cutillo practiced in upstate New York and later at the Northwell Cancer Institute at Northern Westchester Hospital before joining Virginia Oncology Associates in 2022. Throughout her career, she has received numerous honors, including awards for excellence in research, publication of multiple peer-reviewed papers, election as a New York State Top Doctor for several years, and the “40 Under 40 Mover and Shaker” award from the Dutchess County Chamber of Commerce. She has also been featured in Hudson Valley Magazine and Westchester Magazine.

Dr. Schaefer-Cutillo is deeply committed to community involvement. She has served on the Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Committee and the Katz Institute for Women’s Health while in New York, and locally participates in and speaks at community events such as the Elizabeth City Bra-ha-ha and Laura’s Wish Foundation.

Dr. Schaefer-Cutillo has dedicated her life to ensuring all of her patients receive the highest quality of care with a smile and compassion.

Outside of medicine, she enjoys exercising, cooking, and spending time with her husband and two sons.
