Biography
Dr. Simmons is a recognized national leader in the advancement of community-based oncology. Within the US Oncology Network, he has been instrumental in bridging the gap between academic research and community access, with a specific clinical focus on CAR T-Cell Therapy and its evolving role in patient care, the treatment of complex Hematologic malignancies, and expanding the reach of advanced cellular therapies beyond the traditional university hospital setting.
Dr. Simmons earned his fellowship in 2016 and spent several years specializing in stem cell transplantation at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In 2023, he transitioned to Virginia Oncology Associates to lead their cellular therapy initiatives.
What sets Dr. Simmons apart is his dual expertise. In addition to his clinical background, he holds a master's degree in health administration. This allows him to provide a unique perspective on both the clinical complexities and the operational frameworks required to build successful, high-growth cellular therapy programs.
A prolific contributor to oncological research, Dr. Simmons has authored numerous publications on CAR T-cell therapy and stem cell transplant outcomes. He remains deeply committed to the mission of ensuring that innovative, life-saving treatments are accessible to patients in the communities where they live.
Beyond his research and administrative roles, Dr. Simmons is most frequently recognized by his patients for his exceptional bedside manner and empathetic approach. He consistently maintains a 5-star clinical rating, with patients frequently citing his ability to simplify complex oncological concepts and his commitment to collaborative decision-making.
Whether he is navigating the intricacies of a CAR T-cell program or speaking with a patient one-on-one, his mission remains the same: ensuring that the most innovative, life-saving treatments are delivered with the highest standard of personal respect and compassion.
In his spare time, he enjoys being a father to his five children and running ultra-marathons. He has completed several 100-mile endurance runs and once ran 100 miles on a treadmill.
