Biography
Dr. Chike O. Abana obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. in Immunology through the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where he served as an MSTP Student Ambassador to the Medical Center’s Board of Directors and held the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs in the Graduate Student Government Council.
Dr. Abana completed his internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and his Radiation Oncology Residency at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he trained under some of the world’s leading radiation oncologists. As a trainee, he served as a co-principal investigator for MD Anderson’s pioneer clinical trial using the potentially revolutionary ultra-high dose rate (FLASH) radiation therapy technique that can destroy cancer cells with minimal side effects after he demonstrated its safety in his multi-award-winning preclinical investigation using swine models. He also completed the National Medical Fellowship’s Diversity in Clinical Trials Research program, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, and Merck; and has actively engaged in radiation oncology patient advocacy by meeting with members of Congress on Capitol Hill.
Dr. Abana has received numerous awards and funding recognizing his clinical excellence and scientific contributions to the field from MD Anderson as well as from the American Society for Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American Radium Society, and the FLASH Radiotherapy and Particle Therapy group, all organizations in which he is an active member. He also holds membership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in prestigious medical journals and authored chapters in multiple oncology textbooks. He also serves as a reviewer for several oncology journals, including Advances in Radiation Oncology and Journal of Clinical Oncology – Oncology Practice.
Dr. Abana treats all types of cancer with special clinical interests in thoracic and gastrointestinal malignancies, which are among the most prevalent cancer types in the geographic region.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Abana enjoys quality time with his wife, two daughters, and extended family in the United States and Nigeria, DIY home projects, professional photography, Formula 1, basketball, soccer, and foreign culture and language learning. Dr. Abana is fluent in three languages: English, Igbo and Pidgin
