Biography

Dr. Zhao is board-certified in Medical Oncology, Hematology, and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. His interests are in immuno-oncology, targeted therapy, Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP), and developmental therapeutics. Dr. Zhao's research has been published in many peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Zhao is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and he is the past President of the Chinese American Hematologist and Oncologist Network (CAHON).

Dr. Zhao earned his medical degree from Dalian Medical University in China, followed by a Master of Medical Science degree and a Ph.D. in cancer biology. He then went on to conduct postdoctoral research in DNA mutagenesis at the University of Kentucky and tumorigenesis at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Zhao completed his Internal Medicine residency at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey and a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Prior to joining Virginia Oncology Associates, Dr. Zhao worked as a clinical assistant professor at the University Hospitals of Cleveland Seidman Cancer Center (Firelands satellite), where he served as the co-chair of the cancer committee.

During his free time, Dr. Zhao enjoys spending time with family, camping, fishing, and traveling.

He is fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
