Biography
Shelby Burton, PA-C is a seasoned Physician Assistant with over a decade of experience as a PA. Coming from a family of medical professionals, including a sister who is also a Physician Assistant, medicine has long been a shared passion. She excitedly pursued a role in the healthcare field at a young age, becoming a certified nursing assistant at fifteen years old. Her years spent at the bedside, in this role, provided invaluable experience. Her innate drive, to care for, and support her communities, has continued to be her motivation for continuing her medical career.
She grew up in the Midwest, completing her undergraduate studies, at the University of North Dakota, in Grand Forks. After graduation, she moved to Texas, and later overseas, transitioning into the mental health sector. She supported clients in crisis both domestically and abroad, supporting them through complex transitions, including those experiencing homelessness, offering rehabilitation services and medical support, along with housing assistance. In this role, she and her team utilized a holistic approach, ensuring long-term stability and continuity of care. She
returned from overseas to be near her sister and advance her medical education. Her passion for medicine deepened while overseas prompting her return and goal of becoming a PA. She settled into the Hampton Roads area and completed her studies in 2015, earning her master’s degree of Physician Assistant studies at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Her professional experience has spanned both coasts in the last ten years. She has worked in both northern and southern California, Virginia, and North Carolina. She has served inner city, as well as rural mountain communities, along with the island communities of the Outer Banks. In each community she has called home, her compassion and drive to provide high quality evidence-based care to her patients is always her priority. She is pleased to be back in the Hampton Roads area, and she is excited to serve patients in a place that has always felt like home.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys camping with family and friends, off-roading in her Jeep, and traveling whenever possible. She values time spent outdoors hiking, fishing, and boating, along with other hobbies including reading and crafting, which help maintain balance and perspective outside of clinical practice.
