Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Mattern attended
Drake University and the College of Osteopathic
Medicine and Surgery. He completed an Internal
Medicine residency at Des Moines General Hospital
and the State University of New York at Buffalo,
where he also served as chief resident. He completed
a clinical research fellowship at Roswell Park
Memorial Institute, a Medical Oncology fellowship
at the State University of New York at Buffalo,
and he is the Medical Director of Riverside Hospital
Hospice Unit. He is a delegate to the American
Cancer Society’s National Board of Directors
in addition to his private practice with Virginia
Oncology Associates in Newport News and Hampton.
