Cancer Care Team

Providing the best cancer care means understanding the individual needs of each patient and working as a team to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care. Something special happens when you combine the unique talents of individual physicians into a patient treatment team – a team that collaborates daily to ensure patients benefit from our combined experiences and expertise. The result ensures the highest level of care and the best possible outcome for our patients.

The relationships we develop with our patients are a source of reassurance to them and their families. They know that every member of their VOA team will be with them throughout the treatment process to provide a caring, healing experience. Knowing they are not alone helps our patients face the battle against cancer with greater confidence.

Our cancer care team is made up of board-certified and board-eligible oncologists and other oncology-trained clinical professionals who understand the special needs of cancer patients and their families. With many years of experience caring for cancer patients, our physicians, nurses, pharmacists, counselors and other specialists work together to provide world-class, personalized cancer care.

Our cancer treatment team of 36 Medical, Gynecologic and Radiation Oncologists and Hematologists has over 400 years of collective experience. Because we are connected to a nationwide network of community cancer centers, we can draw from the expertise of more than 1,000 other cancer specialists.

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

Our medical oncology team plays a major role in cancer care by managing treatment plans and therapies, monitoring and evaluating progress, and collaborating on best options with other caregivers. We consult with patients on their choices and any temporary side effects they may experience during chemotherapy treatments, as well as offer medical guidance to help patients make decisions along the way.

ONCOLOGY PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS

Oncology Physician Assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions. Within the physician-PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Because of the close working relationship the PAs have with physicians, PAs are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training.

ONCOLOGY NURSE PRACTITIONERS

Oncology Nurse practitioners are advanced practice nurses who provide high-quality healthcare services similar to those of a doctor. NPs diagnose and treat a wide range of health problems. They have a unique approach and stress both care and cure. Besides clinical care, NPs focus on health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and counseling.

ONCOLOGY CLINICAL NURSING

Oncology Clinical Nurses (OCNs) possess in-depth expertise in oncology nursing and on the human needs of people experiencing cancer. The practice of oncology clinical nursing extends to all settings where patients receive health care, education, and counseling for cancer prevention, screening and detection.

OCNs are adept with patient assessments, anticipating complications, monitoring progress, interpreting clinical signs and observations, and minimizing side effects. OCNs have well-developed technical skills in the delivery of chemotherapies, the care of radiotherapy patients, and in the management of central venous access devices.

At VOA, OCNs know the purpose of all treatments: curative, palliative, and adjuvant. They know the principles of staging, as well as common sites for metastatic disease. Moreover, they believe in being there, caring holistically for all parts of the patient.
